History Of Texas Holdem
Almost everybody knows how to play the game Texas holdem. Many players even know many different strategies to gain an edge in the game. But here’s one thing, do you know when and where the game first started?
While this may seem to be of little use to poker player, you may still find the story of the game’s birth quite interesting . Players will also have at least a greater insight of the game while reading its history.
Contrary to the popular belief that Texas holdem was a rather recent invention, this poker variation has been around casinos since the 19 th century. The origins of the game is rather obscure. Some historians point to France as a possible possible source of the game, along with the general game of poker.
Poker itself has an even more obscure history. The game’s origin is still a subject of debate among scholars. Historians note the similarity between the game and the 15 th century German game Pockspiel, from which the name poker is thought to be derived. Both games implement the elements of betting, hand rankings and bluffing. The game is also shown to have similarities with the older Persian game of As Nas.
A newer view, meanwhile, hold the belief that, rather than evolving from a single game, poker was created from the combination of different rules from several game, as well as a few unique game additions. Proponents point out to the unique betting system of the game as evidence.
It is now, however, generally considered by many that Texas holdem in its current form, came out from the state of Texas (hence the name). Robstown in the Texas is generally considered the birthplace of the game, as recognized by the Texas State Legislation. The year the game was first played is also considered as the early 1900’s.
The game was introduced into the Las Vegas casino circuit in 1967 by Texan players led by Crandell Addington and Doyle Brunson. The game was initially played only at the Golden Nugget Caasino. The game was introduced to the public when a group of players known as the Las Vegas Professionals were invited to the then standing Dunes Casino, where many people became attracted to the game.
Texas holdem became even more popular upon its entry into the World Series of Poker as an event. Initially having only eight participants in the first ever event, the number grew to more than a hundred participants by the 1980’s.
The game then received its greatest boost in the nineties with the advent of online casinos. Texas holdem was one of the first few games that gambling sites offered in their roster. When the World Series begun receiving TV coverage, the game also attracted more fans into the fold. The game has also been the subject of numerous films recently, such as the 2007 James Bond movie, Casino Royale, where it is central to the film’s plot. Additionally, the game has also been featured in many books, such as mathematical texts and fictional material.
